Community foundations are not a new idea. The first was set up in Cleveland in the United States 93 years ago. It now manages more than 800 funds and disburses grants every year of more than US$85 million – nearly 3 billion baht.

The model is simple enough: In most communities there are registered charities that have specific purposes. In Phuket, for example, we have charities targeted at helping children from impoverished homes receive an education, charities to celebrate Phuket’s historical heritage, and charities to look after animals.

But there are many challenges that are simply not addressed because the government does not have the funds or the people, and there is no charity or organization set up to meet these challenges.

This is where the Phuket Community Foundation – the PCF – can help.

The PCF raises funds and makes grants to those who need funds.

It should be stressed that the PCF has no political nor religious agenda or affiliation. It is for the community as a whole.
